Humble, Kind, and Just
Will, Sam, and I founded Weatherford Capital 7 years ago. From the beginning, the company was shaped by a few biblical values found in Micah 6:8—humility, kindness, and the pursuit of justice.
He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?- Micah 6:8
We believe this verse and these principles encapsulate the essence of ethical leadership that should guide our business, but we didn't just stumble across them in 2015. Our history with these values goes much further back…
We grew up from humble beginnings with loving parents of 9 children (7 sons and 2 daughters). Our parents had a very deliberate and biblically-based vision for raising us. We were homeschooled as young children and instilled with a particular set of values that shaped who we became as adults.
Of course, if you know our family, you know we were also very active, competitive children, and we all possessed a passion for competing in almost everything we could, including sports. Our desire for competition eventually led us to attend public schools because the "Tim Tebow Law" was not yet enacted in Florida, and we could not play sports at public schools unless enrolled there.
Attending our public school required a 40-minute one-way drive from our home and a lot of taxiing for our father. Each day, with every drop-off, he helped frame the day for us with the same straightforward question as we exited the family car:
What does God expect of you today?
And we'd echo the well-rehearsed answer over our shoulders in response:
To be humble, kind, and just.
Fast forward a couple of decades later, as the three oldest Weatherford sons chose to forge a business partnership and build a company together, that engrained question rang in our ears again. The truth of the answer still applied. We understood that our business ethos would reflect who we were as individuals, and these values would necessarily be the bedrock of the firm.
We inherently knew that the knowledge of these simple words would not be enough; instead, it was more important to frame each day and decision through the same lens—to enter each relationship with humility and kindness and act justly at every opportunity. Weatherford Capital thrives today because of that simple question our dad peppered us with constantly growing up. We believe that when we do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly, the outcomes are good and right for our employees, investors, partners, and communities.
